well there are about a MILLION ways laurent and damen could exist in a harry potter universe, so here is just one of them, circa the first wizarding war:

• laurent’s sorting probably came closest to the first true hatstall hogwarts had seen in years and whether he skillfully argued his way into ravenclaw or slytherin depends on whether or not auguste was alive or dead at the time of his sorting (for the record: i could also make a case for a gryffindor laurent but if you think that boy would ever willfully spend his hogwarts career surrounded by self-selecting hero-complexed lions, no matter a) how brave he is and b) if his brother was one, then you are sadly mistaken)
  
• meanwhile, we could talk all about damen being a gryffindor and what that might mean for some good old fashioned slytherin/gryffindor trope goodness, but why would we do that when their age gap affords us the opportunity for damen, defense against the dark arts professor???? naturally, he’d be a bit of a liability but merlin if he can’t command a classroom. not to mention, in times of war with whispers of death eaters recruiting students before they even graduate, the more order members in the castle, the better.
• three words: double agent laurent. because LISTEN. laurent hero-worshipped his brother — golden boy of the order, obviously destined to help win the war, fight me on this — but he also would know that he couldn’t honor him by following in his path. after all, laurent’s good with his mind, good at scheming, good at working his way through puzzles — he wouldn’t be an asset to the order the same way auguste had been. you know, a real goddamn textbook hero. and so what does laurent do? what can laurent do? plans to join the death eaters as a double agent after graduation, knowing full well that he is more capable than anyone to be four steps ahead of the most dangerous dark wizard alive, even if that means shouldering the pain of people telling him he was a disappointment to his brother.
• which means we have laurent demanding to practice dueling after hours with damen because he’s not! good! enough! yet! what good is all the incredible behind-the-scenes work he can do if he can’t hold his own against order members? damen is hesitant at first obviously. here’s this kid, you know, who’s so different than his brother, who damen knew and respected, who will be using these dueling skills merlin knows where if gossip around the castle is anything to go by. but he’s so fascinated and impressed by laurent’s dueling style (and totally not enamored, nope) that he agrees anyway. agrees to meet and duel until he finally has to tell laurent to go to bed because that boy is a machine who can practice and practice and practice and practice
• which means eventually, after laurent graduates seemingly on the fast track to become a Bad Guy with his new death eater squad, damen — who had become so fond, so FIERCELY PROTECTIVE, of this incredible enigma of a student — would be gut-punched to realize that he’d have to meet him on the battlefield as an enemy. not to mention, he’d probably raise a few questions about his loyalty when the threat of someone in the order attacking laurent threw him into such a blind panic that he came-to realizing he’d stunned a few of his own. and laurent, being laurent, would commit to the death eater role entirely, no matter what had developed between him and damen. bringing down the dark lord, or this~

​I imagine Auguste probably died/was seriously injured in a quidditch match or tournament or something and Laurent considers it to be Damen’s fault and so while Damen went on and became a successful professor, Auguste is dead/in a wheelchair hahahaha I love this au but I also love suffering
